About Naturopathic Medicine

What is naturopathic medicine?

Naturopathic medicine is a regulated healthcare profession in Ontario that focuses on identifying and treating the root causes of illness rather than managing symptoms alone. Care may include evidence-informed nutrition support, lifestyle counselling, botanical medicine, targeted supplements such as vitamins, minerals, and nutraceuticals, acupuncture, and other natural therapies to help support the body's overall function and healing. Naturopathic doctors (NDs) complete extensive post-secondary training before they are able to practise, including an undergraduate degree with prerequisite science courses such as biology, chemistry, biochemistry, physiology, and psychology, followed by a four-year accredited naturopathic medical program. In Ontario, NDs must also pass licensing and registration exams before becoming registered to practise.

Is naturopathic medicine evidence-based?

Yes. Naturopathic medicine integrates current research with established natural therapies. Treatment recommendations are informed by clinical evidence, peer-reviewed studies, and functional laboratory testing. The approach prioritizes what the evidence supports while respecting the whole person: physical, hormonal, digestive, and lifestyle factors all together.

What is the difference between a naturopathic doctor and a family doctor?

Both are trained healthcare providers, but they take different approaches. A family doctor (MD) focuses on diagnosing and treating disease, often with pharmaceutical interventions. A naturopathic doctor (ND) focuses on understanding why a health problem is occurring and using natural therapies to address those underlying drivers. The two approaches can work well together; naturopathic care is often complementary to conventional medicine, not a replacement for it.

Working with Dr. Mariah, ND

What conditions does Dr. Mariah Wilson, ND focus on?

Dr. Mariah, ND focuses on hormonal health concerns, PMOS (polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome, formerly PCOS), fertility optimization, thyroid conditions (Hashimoto's thyroiditis), insulin resistance, digestive issues (including bloating, SIBO, heartburn, and constipation), fatigue, nutrient deficiencies, and general health optimization. Do I need a referral to book an appointment?

No referral is required. You can book directly through the online booking system. Dr. Mariah, ND sees new patients at WOMB Woodstock and InsideU Woodstock for in-person care, and virtually for patients anywhere in Ontario.

What happens during my first appointment?

Your initial consultation is 60 to 75 minutes. During this visit, Dr. Mariah, ND will take a detailed health history. This may include your current symptoms, past health concerns, diet, sleep, stress, medications, and wellness goals. Based on this assessment, she may recommend laboratory testing to better understand what may be contributing to your concerns. You will also receive an initial personalized treatment plan to help you get started.

How long are follow-up appointments?

Follow-up appointments range from 15 to 45 minutes depending on what still needs addressed. Most patients can expect three to five follow-up visits to see meaningful improvement with their primary health concern, though this varies depending on the complexity of your case.

What should I bring to my first appointment?

It is helpful to bring any recent lab results or medical reports you have on hand, a list of your current medications and supplements, and any relevant health records. You also need to complete all intake and consent forms prior to the appointment.

Virtual Care & Location

How does virtual care work?

Virtual appointments are conducted over a secure video platform. They work the same way as in-person visits: Dr. Mariah, ND will review your health history, discuss your concerns, interpret any lab results, and provide treatment recommendations. Lab requisitions, supplement recommendations, and follow-up plans are all accessible virtually. Virtual care is available to patients across Ontario.

Can I see Dr. Mariah, ND if I live outside Ontario?

Virtual care requires that you be physically located in Ontario at the time of each appointment. Ontario law does not permit naturopathic doctors to establish a patient relationship with someone located outside the province. If you are not in Ontario, Dr. Mariah, ND is unable to provide clinical care, though educational resources may be available.

Where are the in-person clinics located?

Dr. Mariah, ND sees in-person patients at two Woodstock, Ontario locations: WOMB Woodstock at 209 Main Street, and InsideU Woodstock at 79 Montclair Drive. Both offer convenient booking through the online system.

Cost & Insurance

Is naturopathic care covered by OHIP?

Naturopathic care is not covered by OHIP (Ontario Health Insurance Plan). However, many extended health benefit plans include coverage for naturopathic services. The amount varies depending on your plan. Check with your insurance provider to confirm your coverage and annual maximum.

Does extended health insurance cover naturopathic appointments?

Many employer-sponsored and private extended health plans include naturopathic coverage, often between $300 and $1,000 per year. Some plans also cover diagnostic laboratory testing. Contact your insurance provider to confirm your specific benefits. Receipts are provided for all appointments.

Lab Testing & Treatment

Will I need lab tests?

Lab testing is often a central part of naturopathic care, particularly for concerns like hormone imbalances, thyroid conditions, fatigue, and fertility. Dr. Mariah, ND may order blood work through standard Ontario requisitions, or recommend private functional testing such as DUTCH hormone panels, stool analysis, or food sensitivity panels. Testing is always discussed and agreed upon before the payment is processed; nothing is ordered without your understanding and consent.

How long does it take to see results from naturopathic treatment?

This varies significantly depending on the health concern. Some patients notice improvements in energy, digestion, or sleep within four to six weeks of starting treatment. Hormonal and fertility concerns often require three to six months of consistent care to see meaningful change, since these systems respond gradually to dietary, supplemental, and lifestyle interventions. Dr. Mariah, ND will give you a realistic timeline for your specific situation.

Still have questions?

The best way to get answers specific to your situation is to book an initial consultation. Dr. Mariah, ND takes the time at every first appointment to address your questions and explain what naturopathic care can offer for your health concerns.
